The SupaRule Railway Overhead Measurement (ROM) System operates using Ultrasonics. It has in place four transducers housed at opposite ends of a stainless steel fixture. The operation of the four transducers is controlled by software and electronics. When activated, the four transducers emit a number of sound bursts (parabolic pressure waves) which are then reflected back from the target cables. The elapsed time is calculated, compensated for temperature, and the distance and stagger is displayed in imperial or metric units. The ROM system has sophisticated on-board electronic circuitry with embedded algorithms in the software allowing for the calculation of complex measurements.
The ROM system has on-board data logging capacity to allow users to analyse measurements and create a "picture" of the state of the overhead system. All measurements taken, up to a maximum of 200, can be retained and later downloaded to a PC through a standard RS-232 port via the cable supplied.
The ROM system is hinged in the middle and can be simply folded and easily carried. When fully extended, it can be fixed accurately on the track as it wedges against the inside of the rails. It can also be modified to suit the different track widths. Measurements are completed at the touch of a button.
The fixture on the ROM systemis fabricated in stainless steel and finished in an anti-corrosive standard safety-yellow paint finish. The ROM system can be quickly removed from the track for later use. A backlight display allows the ROM system to be used at night, when typically the track is at its quietest. Consequently, this is a much safer time to carry out maintenance and surveying work.
The ROM system measures the height and stagger of overhead electric cables on electrified railway networks. It is extremely important for railways to measure the position of the overhead contact wire in terms of height above rail level and horizontal distance from the centre of the track. Keeping this contact wire, which supplies electrical power to the train, within its design parameters optimises current collection and minimises wear of the pantograph carbon and contact wire.
