The SMF LINEAMP is a new concept in overhead line current measurement from the makers of cable height meters, SupaRule.

The device makes the task of measuring current simple and safe, by using a blend of two technologies, Ultrasonics and EMF detection. Measurements can be taken of average or peak current, at the touch of a button, from the pole. The LINEAMP has been designed to operate under any three phase medium voltage line in a current balanced network.

In order to measure the current in an overhead line you need to know;

1. The distance to the centre conductor.
2. The electro magnetic field.
3. The spacing horizontally between the conductors.

Some examples of the spacings that can be pre-programmed into the unit is shown;but other configurations can be programmed to suit your crossarm configurations.

SupaRule cable height meters are now a well accepted method of measuring the heights of cables, with in excess of 20,000 of these instruments in daily use by utilities all around the world.

SupaPow, a division of SupaRule, have merged EMF detection and ultrasonic technologies, with reference to the space between the conductors, which is stored in the LINEAMP's memmory, to give the current. There are a number of stored crossarm types in the LINEAMP's memmory, in addition to the edit function, which allows the operator to programme in their own configuration.

Some uses include;

• Measurement of short circuits from line branches in fault detection.
• Control measurements to be carried out prior to the opening of disconnects (to reduce arcing risk).
• Monitoring of current during fault situations when the temporary feed may exceed the current carrying capacity of the line.
• Finding the "0" point between transforming and switching stations from trunk lines (e.g. in switching situations).
• Confirmation of the assymmetry between conduction currents (e.g. a cut off wire).
